10 ways to care for your wardrobe.

Nov 4, 2017 | 2 comments

/ I’m probably one of the biggest spokesmen of the lasting wardrobe (if I have to say so myself), and therefore I thought it was only about time, that I shared some of my best tips on how to care for your wardrobe. If you are more keen on watching the tips put together visually, I’ve linked my video in the bottom of the post too, but in this post I’ll list all of the tips for your in writing. I hope you find my tips useful, and don’t forget to share your own best tips with me in the comment section down below!

1. Quality comes first

/ Everything from how a certain item looks, feels, how the seams are finished, how it looks after several times of washing, if it balls up when you rub the surface can all be factors that decide the quality of that item. The phrase “good quality” is something many people seem to use these days, but not many people know what it actually means. I guess you can say that many of us have a misunderstood perception of what it means today. You can learn more about how exactly to spot good quality right HERE. Bottom line is, that f you want a solid, lasting wardrobe it all starts with you and your own buying habits.

Hvordan du rent faktisk spotter god kvalitet kan du bl.a. læse mere om lige HER.

2. Do the laundry right

/ You should always follow the instruction in the carelabel of your clothes, when it comes to washing and drying. I NEVER put my everyday clothes in the dryer, I only put things like socks & undies, towels and bedding in the dryer. It’s to harsh on the garments and you may risk shrinkage. I like to hang my clothes on dryers (besides knitwear that must be flat dried) because that makes it super easy to put the clothes back into my closet once it’s dry. It also minimizes the need for extra ironing and steaming. You can watch my laundry routine in the video down below.

Se min vaskerutine i videoen nederst  indlægget.

3. Ironing/steaming

/ Ironing basic clothes like jersey t-shirts is something I love doing, because it really makes them look like new! Remember to follow the instructions in the carelabel, regarding how much heat it requires. I have a handhelt steamer on top of my wishlist (like this one) because not only is it easier to deal with, because you can steam it right on the hanger but most clothes are also fine with being steamed, whereas it’s not all garments that can be ironed.

4. Make a capsule wardrobe/rotate your clothes

/ Not a surprise that I mention this step in here, huh? But storing away clothes from season to season, which you do when you have a capsule wardrobe can really elongate the life of your clothes, because of that little break you give them. Learn how to build a capsule wardrobe right HERE.

5. Learn basic repair-skills

/ If you dont know how to take jeans up/in, mend a hole in a t-shirt, dye a pair of faded jeans or similar: well, youtube is your friend (unless you’re willing to pay to get these things done professionally)! I have a series on my channel called “Fix your wardrobe” where I teach you some of my own best tips, to repair your clothes. You can it HERE.

6. Store your clothes properly

/ How you store your clothes is actually pretty important, in terms of handling your wardrobe with care. A messy, over-flowing closet is not only rough on your clothes, but the older things are often being piled up in the back of the closet all while the new additions keep taking up space in the front. I like to have most of my clothes hanging in my closet (again, except knitwear), because it gives a great overview of what I’m dealing with, plus it makes it super easy to create a nice outfit in the morning. And also, it’s a lot easier for me to deal with laundry since I dry my clothes directly on hangers, and therefore I skip a lot of folding because I can just hang it straight into my wardrobe once it’s dry. You can get an image of how I store my clothes i the video down below and in this blogpost.

7. The importance of good hygiene

/ I ditched the conventional deodorant a long time ago, and now I use a natural crystal deodorant instead. The product not only lasts longer, but you also avoid miscolouring the armpits of your tops, which conventional deodorants have a tendency to do. I used to have problems with yellow marks in the pits of white tops, and on top of that I dealt with a smell that I couldn’t get rid of too, that just got worse through time. You totally avoid this, by switching to a natural deodorant! I buy my crystal deodorant on a danish webshop called Bleschu, but here’s an international alternative. Besides that I like to line the armpits of blazers with a normal feminine pad, to protect them from sweat/odour in stressed situations. That elongates the time between having to drop it off at the dry cleaner’s.

Jeg køber min krystal deo HER.

8. Making secondhand feel like new

/ It takes some effort to make secondhand finds feel like your own, and to get rid of that very vintage-y smell. If you’re dealing with leather products, try giving the product a treatment with leather balm and leave it outside in fresh air. The balm extracts the smell. Repeat if necessary. If you’re dealing with garments and it isen’t enough with washing it, then ty this: mix 1 part vodka with 2 parts of water in a spray bottle, spriz the item you’re dealing with and leave it to dry in fresh air outside. Repeat if necessary. You can read my sechondhand shopping guide right HERE.

Du kan læse min secondhand shopping guide HER.

9. How to clean jewelry

/ Through time your favourite jewelry may become dark/oxidized. But it’s actually super easy to make them look like new again, and I’m sure you already have all the remedies you need! You need: tin foil, a bowl (that can contain boiling water), coarse salt, boiling water and you’re dirty jewelry. Take a piece of tin foil that’s big enough to cover the inside of the bowl. Place a small handfull of coarse salt in the bottom of the bowl. Place your jewelry on top of the salt in the bowl (make sure they don’t cover each other). Pour boiling water over the whole thing and leave it there for 5-10 minutes. Rinse your jewelry with cold water and dry them with a clean cloth. I promise you, this will make your jewelry look like new again!

10. Resole your shoes

/ I’ve made it a habit to leave my shoes and boots at the local cobbler’s a couple times during the year, to get them resoled. I especially like to do it with new shoes that have a leather sole (like many shoes from fx Acne has). A leather sole is really not very practical; it’s slippery and it wears out quickly. I give them to my cobbler and ask to get them resoles, and then he places a piece of sturdy rubber under the sole. If there’s a very plastic-y heel on the shoe, I ask to get that replaced to one that is more soft but durable at the same time too.

I’m glad you are not hanging your knits. I’ve been wondering since you often show and entire capsule on wire handles. An art direction thing I assume… I’m okay with that. I’m am art director myself.
