The perfect basic men’s wardrobe: the cheat sheet.

A couple years ago I made a similar post with THIS overview, but for some reason I deleted that one. Maybe I wasn’t fully satisfied with the result, who knows… anyway, I’ve been thinking about making an updated version for quite some time now, so here’s my new version of the perfect basic wardrobe for men. The way to get started is basically like with my capsule wardrobe guide (that I’m sure most of you already know), so it should be pretty straightforward to get started, I hope.

If you are starting completely from scratch (or your man is starting completely from scratch), you could have a look at my 10 tips on how to build your dream wardrobe from scratch first. There’s also some thoughts on good quality and supporting sustainable initiatives in that same guide. My husband has developed a natural interest in sustainability along the way, and of course this has something to do with the fact that it’s something that matters a lot to me. The above cheat sheet is just a rough guideline and an idea of what a menswear basic wardrobe might look like (or at least how my husband’s basic wardrobe looks). As always it is very individual what the end result looks like – it all depends on your style preferences, what kind of life you’re living, what kind of job you have and what climate you’re living in as well. But for a man who likes the simple style and who is working in a rather casual work environment in an office or the like, this could be a good example. We’ve kept the colours rather classic for menswear. It’s primarily kept in monochrome colours (black/white/grey) mixed with a bit of blue/navy and green. That makes it a lot easier to put together outfits every day, because everything goes well together. I also highly recommend the Cladwell app (yep it’s available for men too!), because it’s such a nice tool to not only get a visual wardrobe overview, it can also put together nice outfits for you every day. Burgundy or a deep red is another colour that is rather timeless for the male version of a basic wardrobe, so that could easily be added as well. My husband does have more items in his wardrobe than those on this overview – he has more shirts in other patterns and colours for example, because a shirt and a pair of jeans is his favourite everyday look, so it’s nice to have some different options to go for from season to season. Then he of course has some more summer appropriate items and likewise items that are more suitable for winter, but these are more season-based and can be added/stored away from season to season. So that’s why I like dividing basic everyday wardrobes in 80% basic and 20% season.

You can learn more in the video below – and if you’re a female reading this, you might want to pass on the knowledge to the man in your life if you’d like to, haha!
