3 comfy yet chic outfits to wear at home

ENG: After a year of lockdowns, being pregnant and then almost a whole year on maternity leave, I can’t deny that I have been wearing either old, worn out, stretchy jeans and a sweater or simply loungewear very much of the time. That’s how it goes sometimes, with the phases you go through in life, but of course the style choices we make here are very individual. I personally didn’t want to buy a lot of new maternity clothes while I was pregnant (because again, we spend so much time at home anyway, so for me it would have been wasted) and I also didn’t want to wear all my favorite clothes out while I was home on maternity leave. You spend so much time on your knees on the floor with the little one, and especially in the beginning it’s not uncommon to walk around almost constantly with a bit of baby-vomit on your shoulder. And those stains don’t get less with time, because then you approach the  world of solid foods, and well … do I need to say more? 😉 However, there are some simple ways in which you can easily style at-home outfits, so you can both relax in your favourite armchair but also feel like a well-dressed version of yourself if you have to leave home. To me comfort is key, and it is very much depending on the type of pants or bottoms I choose on days like these, so that’s mainly what we’re going to be focusing on in this post.

The jeans/shirt combo

ENG: This is probably the combination I go for the vast majority of the time, whether it’s when I’m at work or on a Saturday out with the family. Both jeans and a shirt are indispensable items for me in my everyday wardrobe, and it’s just such an effortlessly cool base to style, I think. On the cool summer days I have for example been wearing a white shirt, dark blue jeans and sneakers or sandals. Spiced up with a nice bag, some jewelry and a pair of sunglasses of course. Easy and chic. After I had the opportunity to try the new circular jeans from Organic Basics last year (through a paid collab btw, but as always my opinion is 100% my own), their jeans have quickly become a favourite! Especially their 5-pocket jeans, which are in a straight fit with a high waist, and despite the fact that there is no stretch in them (something I personally LOVE), they are just super comfortable to wear, even when I’m sitting in the office all day. Comfort is so important when it comes to especially at-home clothes, but then again – don’t we all want to be comfortable all the time? Favourite clothes are clothes you feel good in, not only because it looks great visually, but also because it fits comfortably on your body.

The sweater/jeans combo

ENG.: Similarly to a shirt/jeans combination a jeans/sweater combo is also a lovely, comfortable base that is easy to dress up if you so wish. This combination is perhaps just a tad more casual. It is again one of my favorite combinations all year round, whether I am at work, going somewhere with my family or just relaxing at home. To spice it up and make it a little more stylish I throw on a blazer, trench coat or leather jacket. If it’s too hot for an extra layer I settle for a handful of jewelry, a tinted lip balm and a nice bag. And depending on my mood, I will wear either a pair of ankle boots, a pair of sneakers or a pair of chic sandals.

3 “loungewear but make it chic” tips

The classic sweatpants

ENG.: There is nothing wrong with the classic grey sweatsuit. I think we all have a version of this in our wardrobes and quite frankly – in the same way that it can make a huge difference to wear some nice clothes, it can be wonderfully liberating to just not care at times too. Only when it’s not ALL the time 😉 Go for a pair of nice, soft sweatpants in a simple design that fits well on the legs and cuts right around the ankles. That way you combine comfort and style in a really nice way. You could go for a pair without drawstrings at the waist like the ones above, again to achieve a more “well-dressed” look.  These even look like a pair of tailored trousers and they can be paired with anything from t-shirts, sweaters and shirts to blazers and leather jackets. They can also be styled with both sneakers, sandals and ankle boots.

Dressy drawstring pants

ENG.: An alternative to your “nice” sweatpants is a pair of soft pants like these*, with a drawstring at the waist. They look a bit more like sweatpants, and they are just as soft and comfortable. But because they are made in a woven quality instead of the traditional sweat jersey, you get that well-dressed element, which makes them significantly different from classic sweatpants. They can be dressed up and down in the same way as the aforementioned simple sweatpants. Another thing worth mentioning here is that especially if you have many Zoom meetings you can do a little bit of a “business in the top, coziness on the bottom” so to speak. No one will notice your jogging bottoms and slippers in such a situation, so you can simply keep it well-dressed from the waist up.

Choose darker colours

ENG.: I can easily wear my white t-shirts and shirts, but it needs to be done with more care now that I have become a mother. Sometimes I actually put on an apron when we’re eating, to avoid various stains… seriously. The things you do to protect your favourite clothes, right? 😉 And on the days when we are at home most of the time or where E is not in daycare, out of the house with her dad when I’m working or the like, I simply choose clothes in darker colors, so my outfit is less sensitive to stains. So I deliberately save my nicer clothes for days where I’m out of the house more, and then I’m happy to change into something more practical when it’s all about playtime with my little one. So if you want to add another element of functionality, save your cream silk blouse for another day and go for darker colors and qualities that are not as delicate or where any stains are at least not nearly as visible. It’s a simple way to combine style with comfort and functionality.

I just wanted to take a moment to thank you for your work and your message. I have followed you for a while on YouTube and have been working toward a more minimal wardrobe for a few years, trying to buy secondhand, etc. I had recently been toying with doing the low buy challenge, and the other night finally watched “The True Cost.” Wow – just wow. Intellectually, I knew a lot of those things were going on, but it’s so different to actually see the effect fast fashion is having on real people and the environment.

I will ABSOLUTELY be participating in a low buy challenge for the rest of this year, and I’m using your list as a starting point! (I will have to add some strict rules around a couple of problem areas I have like denim and workout gear – those are a NO buy for me. I will just use what I have.)

Thank you Signe for the continued inspiration and style ideas!! <3
