Quit the q-tips and cotton pads: do this instead!

/ Some of you have probably already seen these tips in some of the videos in my “less waste” series on Youtube, but I really wanted to share them with you in here too in case you missed it. I’m sure many women aren’t really aware of how much waste they actually produce in the bathroom every single day. As some of the most common examples, I can mention q-tips, cotton pads, face wipes, tampons & female pads and the newest addition to the single-use family: sheet masks. We use these products because we have done it for a long time, it works and you can’t see any reason why you shouldn’t when they are available for the purpose of making your busy everyday-life a little more convenient. But I’d like to help you out with finding alternative methods that (if you are willing to change your old habits a bit) might show you that you can easily preserve your beauty routines while producing less waste. And among other swabs I have made in order to reduce my beauty-waste (read mor here), I’ve deliberately chosen to refuse to re-purchase q-tips and cottons pads.

/ Both q-tips and cotton pads come in plastic packaging first of all. In addition, most types of q-tips are made with a plastic tip in the middle, and plastic is, as you know, a major threat to our environment in general. Thats a pretty known fact. I can also mention that in many types of cotton pads there are residues of bleach and other unhealthy chemicals. So why not try to quit these little everyday “wonders” completely?

Let’s take the q-tip first. I once read that in French you actually call the little finger the “ear finger”. And that’s for the simple reason, that it is an excellent tool for cleaning your ears! In fact, it is not even healthy to clean the ears too much as the ear wax protects the ear canal. Occasionally you may need to remove excess wax from the ear opening, and for that I simply use my little finger when I’m still under the shower. Another place I have been using a lot of q-tips i the past is in connection with applying makeup, especially when it comes to removing mascara stains on the eyelid. But instead of wasting a q-tip, I just let the mascara dry for a couple of minutes (while applying blush, for example) and then it can easily be brushed off with a tiny (rather dense) flat eyeshadow brush. Right now we still have a little bunch of q-tips in our drawer that I don’t really know what I’ll do with. I think I’ll try to use them somehow, but after that I’ll  refuse to repurchase them. When they are not available in your home, you think a little more creatively, and get new ideas for what to do instead. And that is in itself a rather sustainable mindset!

Cotton pads. They are very practical and can be used to remove eye makeup and other makeup using toner or similar, and they can also be used to remove nail polish. But to me they have become an unnecessary tool for those purposes. I have completely quit buying cotton pads after I used the last one a couple of months ago. When I have to remove my makeup in the evening, I start washing my face first with water and then with my facial soap. I also make sure to rub water on the lashes so that the “hard” layer of mascara gets dissolved and then it gets a lot easier to remove the rest with my eyemakeup-remover oil. I simply apply a few drops of oil to my fingertips and gently massage the oil around the eyes to remove the last remnants of makeup and then rinse with water. In fact, I often have the oil standing inside the shower, and then I’ll just do it while I’m in there anyway. It also works even if you have eye shadow on! To remove nail polish or if you use toner or similar, I would recommend you to buy a pair of reusable cotton pads. I even have one to remove nail polish and it works really well! the one I have can be found here.

Vatrondeller. Min kan fås her.
