The perfect wide leg trousers (and some thoughts on the new brand ARKET)

May 14, 2018 | 2 comments

I love wide leg pants: like anything else I have in my wardrobe, I think they are very versatile and easy to dress up and down. I lov combining them with a pair of white sneakers and a tee, or with a pair of heeled sandals and a lace cami for a night out. I’ve had a pair of wide leg pants from Asos laying around for a long time, but since they have both become too big and the fact that they are not in a very nice quality, has made me long for a new pair for my all-year basic wardrobe for a long time.

I discovered this pair on a colleague not so long ago, and I fell in love with both the fit and quality of the fabric – so I had to ask where they were from. They turned out to be from the new brand ARKET, which is a new sustainable/transparent brand within the H&M Group. I know many people shake their heads (especially those who – like me – has a beating heart for sustainable fashion) whenever something has the slightest connection to H&M. And my response to this is pretty simple; I’d rather place my money and thus my vote on a brand like ARKET, than boycutting completely. A huge part of the problem with fast fashion is the amount we as consumers buy anyway, so I’d rather buy less but better from a sustainable brand, to support a more green and slow fashion future. I have this dream that the conventional brands will eventually be shut down, and that everything will be moved to these sustainable brands instead. If ARKET is really as good as they say I don’t know yet, but I choose to believe until the opposite is proven. Otherwise you’ll end up making yourself dizzy, and in my opinion that’s not a way to live your life either. Well, anyway.

The wide leg pants are made in wool, and that seemed to cause a bit of worry among you guys when I shared THIS video, because it says on the website that they are not to be washed regularly. I wash both my blazers and other items that are indicated to only be handled by a dry-cleaner, on the gentle wool program in my own washing machine. I even turn down the temperature to only 20 degrees to make it even more gentle. I’ve done this several times with a couple of my blazers, and this is also how I intend to wash these pants. It works like a charm, and I’ve never experienced anything shrinking or getting destroyed. Just remember to iron or steam these items afterwards, so that they get that sharp, neat look back – and remember you don’t need to wash these items very often either. Because the pants are made in wool, you need to be prepared that they have sort of and itch to them. Not a lot (I’m usually really sensitive about things like that), but a little bit. If you’re more into a wide leg pant that is NOT made in wool, I’ve found a pair in tencel which is one of the most sustainable materials out there, and they are from another favourite sustainable brand of mine -find them right HERE*.

“I have this dream that the conventional brands will eventually be shut down, and that everything will be moved to these sustainable brands instead.” I’m right there with you, girl. If only! I’m from Argentina and it’s actually extremely hard here to find labels that work with natural fibers (and don’t even get me started about pants). Instead, we have mostly overpriced synthetic stuff *facepalm*. However, I’m very slowly starting to find some local sustainable brands which were hidden somewhere on Instagram, so at least there’s that. I will keep on looking!
