Why a tidy home keeps me focused.

/ One of the comments I get most often – both on my social channels and in reality – is how clean and tidy our home is. Of course, I take it as a compliment, but sometimes I also get the feeling that people think “dude, chill”. I’m absolutely not trying to make up this distorted picture of a spotless and perfect home, and being a guest in someone else’s home I don’t expect their home to be this tidy either. Home and what makes you feel at home is very individual. Some are fine with messy surroundings, while others (including myself) struggle to focus if there is too much physical “noise” around them.

/ I suffer from concentration difficulties due to a rather high internal activity (excessive thoughts and anxiety), which is also one of the reasons I am very pleased to work alone most of the time I find myself struggling with very large open office environments where there is a lot of talk and noise during the day. When you work as a blogger, you are very much on your own and you work a lot from your home. Therefore, it is even more important to me that my surroundings in our home don’t steal my focus. But it is also important to me that I can come home to my safe place after a day on my part-time job and feel I can turn some of that inner activity off. And I simply can’t do that, if my home is untidy! Actually we rarely spend extra time tidying up; we keep our home tidy without the need for a lot of extra effort, because it’s all about habits and routines.

/ If you use something put it back when you’re done, when you’re done cooking and eating clean the surface and so on. The need for tidy surroundings is mostly my need in our home – my husband is great at helping out and through time he’s even adopted some of these habits himself. But I would say that is probably more a natural act for me, putting things in place, decluttering and cleaning so I wont get unfocused. In addition we have one day a week were the house gets a good cleaning (typically Thursday or Sunday). You can watch my routine in THIS video if you like. Besides that, we thoroughly decluttered our entire home about six months ago using the Konmari Method (read more HERE), which I can highly recommend, especially if you just want to get better at keeping your home tidy in the long run too. I realize that it must be really difficult with small children, but when that time comes I’m sure I’ll  find ways to compromise but still meet my needs for tidyness. 😉
